Room to Grow: Why We Made a Loc Cap for Kids
When I first started LittleRootz, I didn't picture a product line beyond bonnets and durags. It wasn't until the brand started gaining traction, and messages started coming in from parents of kids with all kinds of hairstyles, most commonly locs and long braids, that we considered introducing a different kind of product: one for kids with longer hairstyles that need room. So we made a loc cap.
Locs aren't new. Protecting them properly is.
Locs have been worn for thousands of years, across many cultures (history of locs). Caps made specifically for them are a newer concept, and most on the market are sized for adults. Kids' heads are smaller, their locs are often still forming, and they move a lot in their sleep. So, we designed around all three.
What we got right, and why it matters
A satin lining. Satin creates less friction than cotton pillowcases and sheets, which means less frizz and less moisture pulled out of the hair overnight. For locs, that's the difference between neat, healthy-looking locs and fuzzy ones.
An adjustable band, not a tight one. The band adjusts to your child's head instead of squeezing it. Constant pressure along the hairline can lead to breakage, so we'd rather it sit snug than tight.
Room for length. The cap is long enough for locs to fall comfortably inside it, instead of being folded up on top of the head. It fits back-length locs and shorter, and works for kids ages 2 to 12.
Not just for locs. Box braids, twists, long natural hair: if the style needs space, the cap works.
A small bedtime tip
Gather your child's locs loosely toward the back before the cap goes on, and tuck the ends in last. Loose is the goal. Pulling locs tight into a bun every night puts the same stress on the roots that the adjustable band is designed to avoid.
The takeaway
Kids with locs shouldn't have to make do with a cap built for someone else. Give their locs room, keep satin between their hair and the pillow, and skip anything that pulls at the hairline. If you want to see ours, it's the MY HERO™ Satin-Lined Loc Cap.
